Major Types Of Water Pollution And Their Effect On Our Future

Environmental concerns have become the primary topic of educational as well as political debates these days. There is a need for more awareness and prompt decisions on these issues since our future is in peril. One of the scariest parts of this crisis is water pollution. The entire planet is reeling under harmful water pollution effects on the environment and human health. Let us look into the major types of water pollution in the world affecting us daily.

Groundwater Pollution- The Worst Types Of Water Pollution

Groundwater is one of the most important of the natural resources in the world. A fall in the level of groundwater can lead to a significant water crisis. It is also a vital source for drinking water since most of the clean water is pumped to the earth’s surface. In some parts of the world, groundwater is the only source of freshwater. However, with rising water pollution in the world, groundwater pollution has become a cause for worry. It is one of the most harmful types of water pollution and can have adverse effects in the long run on human health. Pesticides, fertilizers and other contaminants contained in agricultural runoff or water from landfills often reach groundwater aquifers. This contaminates the water and makes it dangerous for use. The worst part is that it is tough and expensive to purify contaminated groundwater, and it can remain unusable for several years.

Surface Water Pollution

Surface water refers to the water present in the major water bodies of the world. Every bit of blue you find on the globe is surface water. As most of us are aware, 70% of the earth’s surface is covered with water. But the saddest fact is that most of it is slowly heading towards becoming too contaminated.

The surface water of the earth is in grave danger due to human activities. In the USA alone, one-third of the lakes and streams are incredibly polluted and have become unfit for drinking or other recreational activities. The central reason for surface water pollution is contamination through nutrients. Agricultural runoff contains phosphates and nitrates, which hugely pollute the water bodies. Sewage water and industrial discharges also contain enough toxins to poison the water bodies of the world alarmingly.

Marine Pollution

A large part of surface water pollution is marine pollution. This kind of pollution has its origin in the land surfaces, and the contaminants travel to the ocean to pollute the entire body. Chemicals and nutrients from agricultural runoff, discharge from industries and factories, and sewage from cities reach the rivers. These are further carried into the seas and oceans, mainly affecting the marine water and marine life as well. Another contributor to marine water pollution is the oil leaks and spills that profoundly endanger marine life.

It is quite evident from the extent of water pollution that our future is in danger. The entire animal world is under major threat. Human life is also affected by the deadly effects of water pollution, such as skin infections, arsenic poisoning, and other water-borne diseases like cholera and typhoid. The situation is already alarming, and things can worsen if we do not take action immediately.
