Polar Bear Habitat: An Invasion Due To Climate Crisis

Just imagine this scenario: you live in the urban part of the Northern Territories in Canada. It’s cold outside, the snow is pouring in heavily. As you marvel the snow storm from your window while sipping your hot tea. Seems like an ordinary day to you, a bit lazy, cold and all you can see outside is the white snow covering the ground. Darkness swallows everything from the distance, giving you poor visibility. Well, typical Northern Canadian day, right? Well, it will change soon.

In the distance you see an odd silhouette, kind of resembles a  large man with an overcoat. You just don’t mind it, but suddenly it went closer and closer to you. A frightening scene shocked you as a polar bear just meters away from your house. Walked by and entered the nearby woods. This, my friend, is just one of the few cases, people living near the Arctic circle encounter. Often as these apex predators scrounge the nearby urban population for food.

They may seem adorable and cute, but they are ferocious hunters. And is hailed as the largest land carnivore existing today.

Being the largest species of bears, male polar bears may reach a towering 3 meters when standing up. Adult males also weight around 775 lbs to more than a ton. It only seems to be white due to the refraction of light from their clear hair strands.

Polar bears are adept swimmers, and they are considered as marine animals due to their expertise in swimming. They live and thrive in the polar regions, especially in the northern parts of Canada, the United States (Alaska), Russia, Norway, and Greenland. These bears are built to withstand freezing temperatures, even as low as -2 degrees Celsius.

A lot of reports, especially around the Arctic regions, where polar bears are seen near human communities. These bears are so desperate to look for food that the scrounge dumpsters and even pose as a threat to pets and other wildlife.

The ten hottest years, happened within the past two decades. Last year, experts recorded that the ocean had the highest temperature ever recorded. This only proves that climate change is here, and we have already felt it.

Due to this increase in global temperatures, polar bears (usually the animal used to describe climate change), is just one of the countless victims of this global phenomenon. Experts believed that if global temperatures will continue to increase, half of the world’s wildlife will become extinct.

Polar Bears Habitat and the Climate Change

This ever-increasing temperature warms the oceans, which thaws the ice caps in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. This event melts the hunting grounds of Polar bears. Driving them to look for other hunting grounds in search of food. Eventually, they may reach nearby human towns and communities looking for their next meal. Everything can be a fair game for a hungry 3-meter tall predator, even us humans.

Climate change will not just turn endangered species to go near human territories. This will also create strife over resources between and within species. As resources become scarce, animals become desperate to find food. They may even hunt us, humans, just to fill their empty stomach.

Although we have these natural phenomena happening around us, there is still hope to reverse this. There are a lot of effective methods that can drive polar bears back to the wild. Using flares and water cannons are a safe way of scaring them away.

These fixes are only a stopgap solution, but what we need to do is to take action to counter climate change. Carbon emissions should be reduced, that is by stopping the use of fossil and switching to renewable energy. Proper disposal of our garbage and helping with cleaning projects are also ways to reduce pollution.

In the end, it’s not just these animals who are suffering the consequences of our actions, but we humans too are affected. We share the planet with the other 8.7 million species of animals. And as a higher being, it is our duty to protect it.
