Ozone Layer Depletion – we all know the importance of our ozone layer. Due to this invisible yet impenetrable shield in our atmosphere, we are safe from the harsh factors present in space. This natural bulwark made of gases have been developed by our planet for millions of years. Protecting us from tiny meteorites, harmful ultraviolet rays and helps regulate the planet’s heat for eon. Thus, making it one of the most effective natural defenses our world have.
Since the start of the industrial revolution, we humans have developed a lot of things as our technology advances, making our lives more comfortable than before. Gone are the days that we need to hunt for food and pretty much do all the things we usually do manually. For today, pretty much anything can be done quickly. Despite all these advances in our technology, we haven’t foreseen the adverse effects of these, especially on our environment.
Some changes happened to our ozone layer around 50 years ago based on reports. Experts found out that our ozone layers are gradually reducing its thickness. It is resulting in bizarre weather phenomena happening around the world. It is also the main culprit why we are experiencing global warming today.
Causes of Ozone Layer Depletion
Of course, most of the causes of Ozone Layer Depletion are due to human activity. Air pollution is one of the leading reasons for this phenomenon in which harmful gasses are released into the atmosphere. Gases such as chlorine, bromine may be harmless under normal amounts present in the atmosphere. But increased numbers of these gases will deplete down the number of ozone gases that act as a shield against harmful UV rays.
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydro Chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) and other volatile organic compounds are harmless and remain stable in the lower atmosphere. But once it reaches the higher regions of our atmosphere or the stratosphere, it reacts with the ozone gases which results in its depletion.
Impact of Ozone Layer Depletion
There are a lot of adverse effects that we can get from the Ozone Layer Depletion. For ease, we will break it down into two categories; Its impact on our bodies and its effects on the environment.
With regards to health issues, Ozone Layer Depletion will increase the number of UV rays hitting the surface of the planet. And exposure to UV rays will result in a higher chance of having several types of skin cancers. Also, it contributes to the rapid aging of the skin. UV exposure can also be very harmful to our eyes, for direct exposure to UV light can also result in photokeratitis, Cataract, and other eye problems.
Effects To The Environment
The effects of Ozone Layer Depletion of our environment will change not just the weather, but also the things around us too. Thus, this includes land, water, and all life forms. Ozone Layer Depletion is the leading cause of Global Warming, which changes our weather patterns and intensifies common weather conditions. Due to this, we can experience unnaturally strong typhoons, extreme droughts, and heat wave. And also severe winters. Plants and animals cannot survive if there is increased UV radiation in the atmosphere due to the decreasing amounts of ozone gases in our atmosphere.
How To Prevent The Damaging of Ozone Layer?
There are a lot of ways on how we can prevent this. First of all, is to reduce the use of CFC by transitioning from fossil fuel into another source of renewable energy. We can also promote the use of electric cars. And other vehicles to eliminate carbon emission into our atmosphere (same goes with factories too that uses coal or fossil fuel as their primary source of fuel). Also, it is best to eliminate the use of aerosol products which contains CFC as well.
Having a healthy ozone layer is essential to the survival of our planet. If we can manage to stop the gradual depletion of the ozone layer, we can once again normalize our weather patterns. And also decrease the effects of global warming. It is important to let all people be aware of our current situation right now. If people know the implications of their actions with regards to our surroundings, we can heal the world back to its former glory.
