What is Battery Recycling? Recycle Of Different Batteries

0

Material waste is a critical global problem to take care of. We use batteries in may devices in day to day life. What do we do when the battery is failing or damaged? However, we throw them away in the garbage. Have you ever thought of recycling the battery? Moreover, batter recycling is the method of reprocessing or reusing batteries to decrease material wastes. Poisonous chemicals of the cells pollute the soil and water when you throw them anywhere and cause many environmental issues.

Our health depends upon the surroundings we live and the food we have. Batteries may harm soil, water, and in turn, harm our health.

Battery Recycling Process:

All devices may not use the same type of battery. Different methods have different king of batteries to be utilized. Most of the cells are available for recycling, but some may not recycle. You can recover 99% of the Lead battery because of the value of lead and level of toxicity. Other cells are lithium iron (Li-ion), nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH), nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cd), and nickel-zinc (Ni-Zn). They all are mostly recyclable.

How To Recycle Different Types Of Batteries?

Lead Battery Recycling:

Collection: collect the batteries from the waste collection center or disposal place and send them to the recycling point.

Crushing: Hammer mill is the machine that breaks the batteries into many parts. In addition, it crushes the cells.

Sorting: Now lead, and other heavy metals are separated from the plastic.

Sieving: Polypropylene material is taken away and can be used to make new batteries.

Pyro-metallurgical processes and Hydro-metallurgical: The process of separating lead is fundamental in recycling lead batteries. In Pyro-metallurgical operations, recover lead by chemical and physical transformation processes like roasting, calcination, smelting, and refining. Hydrometallurgical methods are based on aqueous chemicals.

Alkaline Zinc Air Or Zinc Carbon Batteries Recycling

You can recycle Alkaline Zinc Air batteries with part separation, a mechanical process. However, the innovative dismantling process mainly three parts of the cells. The first one is steel, the second is plastic and paper, and the third one is manganese or zinc concentrate.

Recycling Lithium Batteries

Through hammering, first, separate each part of the battery and then separate plastic and paper from the debris. Break small inner parts into pieces. Now, neutralize the components’ electrolytes by adding them into alkaline water. Separate ferrous and non-ferrous metals. After the neutralization process, you can use clean metals in manufacturing or sell. Recover the remaining copper or lead particles by filtering the solution. Moreover, Carbon can be reused, and lithium combines with carbon to form lithium carbonate. However, Lithium carbonate is important to produce lithium ingot elements and lithium foil.

Mercury Batteries

Mercury battery has high toxic heavy elements in it. So, always handle the mercury batteries carefully. You should concern the temperature of the recycling process of the lithium battery. You can apply any recycling process but in an environment with controlled temperature, and use separated mercury in dental amalgams, new mercury batteries, fluorescent lighting. However, we never recommend using mercury batteries because of environmental and human health threats. Moreover, even some countries have banned mercury batteries.
